The couplings are used whenever torsion between machines being connected is either not required or not desired, but where machine-shaft misalignments must be compensated for.

The torque is transmitted via a compressed elastic intermediate ring. This ring absorbs shocks and torsional vibrations, is resistant to oil and largely insensitive to temperature.
